In 2011, Project Vote and our partners—including the ACLU, the Coalition for the Peoples’ Agenda, Demos, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the NAACP—filed a lawsuit in the State of Georgia to ensure that state public agencies were offering voter registration to clients as required by the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). The result was a successful settlement, and a dramatic surge in the number of registrations coming out of Georgia public assistance agencies.

Similar lawsuits brought as part of the Government Agency Voter Registration program, to enforce the NVRA, have been successfully settled in Missouri, Ohio, New Mexico, Louisiana, and other states. We estimate that this work has resulted in over 2 million applications from public assistance agencies.
