The Missouri Senate proposes to amend the state constitution to enable the passage of a voter ID law requiring all Missourians to show government-issued photo ID to vote. If approved, the measure would be decided by voters in the November 2014 election.
SJR 6 was filed on Monday. Its enacting legislation, SB 27, was also filed this week.
In 2006, the Missouri Supreme Court struck down the state’s original voter ID law as unconstitutional. Although an estimated 230,000 voters would be affected by a voter ID law, lawmakers have proposed constitutional amendments like SJR 6 over the last several years.
