A national effort to increase Election Day participation among young voters was a success in Springfield, Mass. this week, according to an abc40 report. The event was organized by Project Youth Vote, a partnership between Project Vote and ACORN, and was only one of dozens that took place nationwide in high schools yesterday, timed to coincide with Constitution and Citizenship Day, the 221st anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. In response to reports Wednesday that the Michigan GOP intended to use lists of home foreclosures as the basis for a “voter caging” operation, Project Vote wrote a letter today to both major political parties explaining why challenging the eligibility of voters on the basis of their presence on a foreclosure list would violate state and federal laws and risk federal criminal penalties.

The Michigan GOP has announced plans to use a list of housing foreclosures as the basis for a broad voter-caging operation, as reported yesterday by Eartha Jane Melzer in The Michigan Messenger. James Carabelli, chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Michigan, has announced plans to assign “election challengers” to polling places to question the eligibility of home foreclosure victims based on residency. “We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” Carabelli told the Messenger.

Columbus, OH - In response to strong concerns expressed by Project Vote about the potential for partisan abuse of Ohio’s vague voter challenger laws, Ohio’s Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner took an important step to clarify the law and protect Ohio voters from partisan voter caging. In a directive issued on Friday to all Ohio Elections Boards, the secretary makes it clear that Ohio voters must be afforded notice and due process before their right to vote is challenged, and that returned mail alone can not be used as a partisan tool to suppress the vote in this presidential election year.
