Legal Internships

Project Vote is seeking talented law students or recent graduates that are committed to civil rights and expanding the electorate to mobilize low income, minority, youth, and other marginalized and underrepresented voters. Project Vote utilizes research, litigation, advocacy, and field expertise to ensure that voter registration is accessible, effective, and enduring.

We offer internships during the summer and externships during the fall and spring. During the summer, interns must work a minimum of 40 hours a week for at least eight weeks. During the spring and fall, interns must work a minimum of 10 to 15 hours a week. All positions are unpaid; however, Project Vote will provide assistance as necessary to receive academic credit or outside funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with litigation that ensures that state and local governments are in compliance with the United States Constitution, state election laws, and federal election laws, such as the National Voter Registration Act, Voting Rights Act, and Help America Vote Act;

  2. Draft statutory memos, policy papers, research memoranda, and correspondence with election officials as needed;

  3. Track legislative bills to identify progressive and problematic election laws;

  4. Meet with local election officials to gather information and negotiate solutions; and

  5. Conduct legal research on applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

The candidate must have strong research, writing, and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with the National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, and Voting Rights Act is preferred, but not required. Fluency in Spanish is also a plus.
