Washington Post Looks at “GOP’s Voter ID Gambit”

In today’s Washington Post, Aaron Blake looks at the GOP-driven move in many states to implement stringent voter ID requirements,  a strategy “characterized by critics as thinly veiled efforts to disenfranchise poor and minoirty populations who tend to vote Democratic.” As Project Vote Research Director Lorraine Minnite, author of The Myth of Voter Fraud, explains in the article, understanding the dangers of strict voter ID laws takes time, and the GOP fast-tracking of these bills is flying largely under the radar. “I don’t see a big political risk for [Republicans], which is why they are winning the issue,” Minnite says.

“I don’t think we’ve seen an attack like this on voter’s rights in many years,” says Tova Wang, of Demos.
